Samuel Hill
Pianist-Composer
About Samuel
Samuel seeks to tell new and compelling stories by championing under-performed works and composers, and placing music from the Western canon in fresh and interesting contexts. He is passionate about connecting and collaborating with people from different instruments, genres, mediums, and walks of life.
He has studied piano under Glenn Riddle at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, where he completed his Bachelor of Music in 2023, and is undertaking his Honours. His time at the Conservatorium has seen him explore 20th and 21st century solo piano repertoire, work with peers in the composition department to premiere new works, and gain experience performing alongside singers. Samuel was a finalist in the 2024 Australian National Piano Award, and was awarded the Conservatorium's 2024 Bachelor of Music Keyboard Prize for his achievements during his studies.
In future, Samuel aims to further build his network of collaborators, and shape his artistic practice around resisting the increasing commodification of music. This will entail a conscious emphasis on in-person experiences which promote human connection, and on telling meaningful human stories from both the past and present.

Teaching
My main goal as a teacher is to produce effective, creative, and engaged musicians, by creating a safe and supportive environment where they can develop their skills and find their voices. I love helping students to develop robust practice habits, creative processes, and problem-solving skills. These skills not only help us pursue music as a means of creative self-expression, but also provide a tool-kit for living a more productive, meaningful, and happy life.
Since I started teaching in 2016, I've had opportunities to work with students from a wide range of backgrounds. I've taught piano and composition in a number of styles including classical, jazz, and contemporary popular music. I integrate age and style-appropriate aural, theory, and music appreciation skills into all of my teaching; with a view to developing well-rounded, musically-literate students.
If you're interested in working together, please get in touch at samuelhillmusic@gmail.com – I'd love to discuss your/your child's strengths, interests, and needs!
I maintain an up-to-date Working With Children Check that I can provide on request.
